Warm, dry day. Still lots of haze & smoke from Yellowstone Park fire – been going on for weeks. Did laundry. Washed up eggs, hoses going. Everything dry. Guys swathing some feed. Fixed sliced ham (bone-in), very good. Rec’d letter from Helen. After lunch worked on pool about 2 hrs. Backwashed, swept, etc. Added water. Bill decided to have guys drill a little more sandy ground on sec. What drilled last week not up yet. I wrote Helen. Called to see if Jeannie is at Larned (they came in to work on well at runway). I started supper & took gift for Drew up to Jeannie at Ralph’s.
Temp range: 42° – 62°
Warm this morning. Had to do chores in dark though. Hit sore right below knee with bucket – about sent me into orbit – hurt so bad for a while. Joyce thinned hair. Missed communication or would have had it cut. Called Ralph, he’s getting better. Got groceries & picked up huge poinsettia at Larned G. from Great Bend feeders. Put groceries away & got Bill’s lunch. Picked up Jean, Doska, Kay & Norma to go to Main Floor St. John. Jewell, Harriett & La Donna came together. Sheila brought Esther. The house was decorated so nice. None of the others had been there before. La Donna brought tape player & I brought 3 Christmas tapes. Esther seemed so glad to be there. Ilene served a nice salad, chicken breast, rice pilaf, green beans, cinnamon rolls, chocolate mint pudding, coffee, tea or hot tea. Everyone seemed to have a lovely time. Esther was pleased with blue towels & milk bath. Sheila gave me me colored yellow dressed [mammie??]. We toured the antique shop. Bill had brought poinsettia from colony.
Ice on car.
Days Inn, Hattisburg – Room 127.
We ate breakfast & Harold picked us up. Took us out to see 1,400 head – 400 or less pound steers – going to Angel Fire this summer. Talked to him about getting calves to go to Hornbaker then grass. Started feeling lousy & didn’t think I’d make it back to room. [Burped] orange juice & water. Diarrhea. Greg came & he & bill ate lunch, went to see cattle down south. Slept a little. Ralph called, told him I had the flu. Greg & Bill came back – I still could hardly get out of bed. He wanted me to see cattle at his place & out by Mos (350 head). About ruined my back. Bill at supper, I stayed in bed.
Temp range: 44° – 80°
Up early, at least it’s daylight. Bill came home to say he’d talked to Dawn. Mrs. Parker very ill with cancer of the brain he thinks. Joyce gave me perm, already had hair cut so cut the time down some. Went by Dillons & got 2 apple boxes (to put carns in). Went by Ralph’s – he wasn’t there. Went back & got groceries. Called Ward to get permission to dig turnips. It was a different field. First field was not very big – a rider came along said to go south a mile & east. They were bigger, so got some more. Home a few minutes after 2pm. Hadn’t eaten, put groceries away. Bill came in – fixed pot of turnips. Took some to Doska & Kay (she wasn’t home). Ona White had called yesterday.
Temp range: 30° – 44°
Up early to get chores done, asked Bill to go to Kinsley to get long tube for Christmas tree Mary H. gave me. Took a bath. Mary Ann came at 9am. I put boxes back downstairs from decorating. Got out more stuff. Tootie called. Ralph’s cake is ready, so went after it. Washed all the rugs. Mary Ann finished at noon. I got lunch & finished eggs. Bill had a bank meeting at 4pm. Art & Mabel came out. Called Ralph’s about 4 for SS#, Eddie said he was only there about 20 minutes & went home with flu. I talked to Jeannie about 9am. They called from Ralph’s about 4:30. He was very sick. Thought they’d go into Wichita. I mailed some stuff, did nails. Was in bathtub & Bill came home at 5:30. They came in with whiskey & champagne. Had a drink & marinated herring. They changed to go to their book party. Ours was at Sandhills, not so many hors d’oeuvres, but very good. Had filet mignon, and good dance music. We danced the most in ages.
Temp Range: 68° – 98°
Didn’t go to sleep until after 3am. Got up about 8, did chores, started water. Bill came in about 8:45 & wanted to go to Greenleafs at Greensburg. We left about 9:30. Norma came before we left with loaf of home made bread. She had taken Doska out for breakfast. When we got to Greanleafs, couldn’t find a soul. We drove to west pastures, lots of grass, but no cattle. Checked the east pasture – nothing. 2nd pasture had cattle, but not ours. Ate at Burkes. Home before 1pm. Everyone gone. Rested a little then hoed both gardens. Gnats & flies really bad. Bill napped. Mary Helen called & we’re going to R. V.’s wedding. Bill declined. Ralph called. I set out petunias and salvia. Mary Helen picked me up, only 22 at wedding, but so pleased we came. Mary Helen & I had a drink at Cedars, brought bill some cake.
Temp range 43° – 76°
Up early. Burned trash. Did chores. Saw Alice a minute, tried to see Susie R. Thought coffee was at Harvest Inn but was at Garden Room. Saw Ralph. Rusty & Susan’s 88 Continental was in. I drove it to Trail Center & back. Navy blue with navy leather seats. Ralph said it would give Mercedes a run for their money. Got a few plants at Dillons. A beautiful day. Bill took group to Greenleaf’s to brand 99 steer that came in last eve from Montana. Ralph called Northwest Airlines about tickets to Hattiesburg. His plane has an oil leak. Went home & fixed tacos. Bill & guys ate at Greensburg. Saw Schnoebelen, blood sugar down to 80. New doctor coming in July. Steak supper in Trousdale, bridge at Norman’s.
Temp range 43° – 74°
A beautiful day but it went sour early. I asked Bill how he felt & he must have been talking to someone. He has to be sick in his mind. I can’t believe his filthy mind. I stay home & work. Keep the yard, garden and flowers. Do laundry, cook, and help him with his books and checks. I’ve never given him any reason to doubt me. He’s determined to lie & make up stories. It makes me sick at heart. He came back & said he’d seen “Hoot” over in town, which I doubt. We ate over in town & stopped to look for her. No luck. Stopped at Colene’s & fed kittens. First time sun has shown in ages. Very wet til after noon. Looked at Wheatons Feed; he will fill our silo at $14/ton. I worked on boska all afternoon. Made chili. Mowed by pool 5:45 til 7. R.V. came & raked. I gave him chili. Joe called, will be out this weekend. Has set date for April 1st.
Temp range 58° – 80°
Crisp morning but got windier. Joe came down first. Drank coffee and took Ranni (Haynes) up some. Guys went out on drills about 9:30 (on Holmes & s. part of section). Ranni & Joe each at 2 eggs, bacon & toast. Bill came in & had a roll with them. We looked around, showed her garden & convertible. Thought the place looked like “paradise”. They went to look at ground & have lunch with Ralph. I went over to town & mailed fair party card & stopped at the thrift shop. Fixed sandwich for lunch. Bill accused me of taking $1,000 out of his bill fold. I never touched it. Accused me of stepping out, etc. I blew my stack! Went out to clean the pool & mow. He sent Brian up to help. Then apologized. Ralph, Joe & Ranni came over. I fixed zucchini, Ralph cooked steaks. I’d put up patio lights. Cats got about half of a steak. Merlene is moving.
Temp range 58° – 90°
Windy about all day & still windy at 11:20 P.M. Ralph and Merlene left about 40 minutes ago. Waiting on Greg & he finally called after 8:30. Was in Hutch (had gotten lost) so decided to stay there. I went out about 7am to see what I’d caught in my trap. Liver was gone & gate shut down. Trap was empty. Greg called 10 til 9, was in Ft. Worth. Mary Ann came over at 10am til noon, cleaned living room & we changed the bedding upstairs. Fixed Bill’s lunch & I was hostess at DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution) luncheon at Harvest Inn. Took new impatiens and pale blue robe for Doska in Great Bend. She’d gone home. Got groceries & Bill came in from cutting wheat with Brian. Bill said 3,000 bushels from 1pm to 7:20.
